Editorial Services

by Charlotte Johnson

Who I Am

I am an avid reader and book lover who never goes anywhere without a book - or two! With an undergraduate degree in Great Texts and a Master’s degree in Children's Literature, I have extensive experience with reading and analyzing texts.

Before transitioning into freelance work, I honed my skills working in the publishing industry, first as an intern in the marketing department, gaining valuable insight into market trends and content strategy. Then as a reader intern, reviewing and analyzing manuscripts that literary agents were interested in. And, most recently, as an agency assistant, assisting with administrative tasks, editorial work, and project management.

Because of my vast experience, I have the ability to adapt my editorial skills to a range of genres and age groups. My combined expertise in reading, editing, marketing, and publishing makes me an ideal collaborator for authors looking to fine-tune their manuscripts and create compelling content.

What I Do

I’m a freelance editor offering services including book coaching, developmental editing, query letter support, and market research.

I provide in-depth developmental editing with a focus on narrative flow, character arcs, plot cohesion, and more.

While reviewing query packages, I offer strategic guidance on how best to represent oneself and ones work.

Whether working on developmental editing, proofreading, or manuscript evaluation, I am dedicated to ensuring each project meets the highest standards of quality while staying true to the heart of the story.

Testimonials And More

“Charlotte is an astute reader, able to discern strong stories, possibilities for revision, and how a project might fit into the marketplace” - Lori Steel, Founder and Agent at SteelWorks Literary

“Charlotte has a rare gift for spotting the heart of a story and knowing how to nurture it. Her feedback on my romantic suspense novel was insightful, encouraging, and always grounded in what best served my characters and their journey. She helped me strengthen my plot, deepen emotional beats, and clarify character motivations without ever imposing her own vision over mine. Thanks to Charlotte, my manuscript became more compelling, heartfelt, and structurally sound.

I would work with Charlotte again in a heartbeat and recommend her to anyone looking to elevate their love story with the help of a sharp, kind, and passionate editor.” - Harper McDavid, author of Zapata and winner of The Colorado Book Award.
